The Honors College is seeking three to five responsible, organized and creative journalism students to serve as parts of our communications team. In this position, you will be assisting with event photography, marketing support, writing profiles of students and alumni and/or covering significant Honors events — these articles may be used for our Honors Updates newsletters, social media posts, Nevada Today articles, and local news media.

This role is ideal for students looking to gain real-world experience in media, marketing and professional communication. Prior writing, photography or design experience is helpful — but training will be provided for committed candidates who are eager to learn and carefully follow guidelines.

Position Details:

  • Part-time student internship
  • Approximately 6-8 hours per week
  • Weekly in-person meeting required (timing flexible depending on class schedules)

Responsibilities:

  • Feature Stories: Interview and write articles for Honors Publications and Nevada Today on unique student and alumni experiences and accomplishments
  • Event Coverage: Attend important events and assist in creating high-quality media coverage for the Honors College – this may include photo, video and written coverage. Equipment from the Honors College and the University may be used to aide in the creation of this content.
  • Organization and Workflow: Upload, label and organize all content into designated shared folders for team access. Complete tasks in a timely manner and follow the communications workflow.
  • Project and Calendar Management: Maintain an updated project and event calendar. Help adapt media plans when emergency events or last-minute needs arise
  • Collaboration and Communication: Attend a short in-person meeting once per week for project updates and planning. Work alongside other interns to pitch and produce stories. Work with members of the Communications Committee and attend committee meetings if requested. Carefully follow branding guidelines, assignment instructions and event coverage standards. Respond promptly and professionally to emails and communication requests – Use of Box, Outlook and Teams is required.

  • Highly responsible, organized and able to meet deadlines independently
  • Professional communication skills — must consistently and promptly respond to emails
  • Comfortable collaborating with other interns, honors students and staff team members
  • Ability to adapt to last-minute schedule changes for event coverage
  • Interest in journalism, media production, communications, marketing or a related field
  • Basic familiarity with journalistic writing, photography, video recording or editing preferred (or willingness to learn)
  • Willingness to follow instructions carefully and uphold Honors College standards in all projects
  • It is not required to be a member of the Honors College, but it is preferred.

Skills You’ll Gain:
